The brief for Lumex, a brand of internationally renowned CNC supplier Matsuura, was to showcase Lumex as being leaders in their unique hybrid production platform that create components that conventional machining methods cannot while following their corporate sustainability brief. Vital to the project brief was the criteria to meet the sustainability element. The exhibition area had to be designed and constructed from sustainable and low energy materials, while also importantly transportable with minimum or zero waste at a total of four events.
Following the Priority principle of reduce, recycle and reuse, the brief fell comfortably within the scope of the design materials and concepts we have been utilising, working towards our sustainability accreditation. The creative allowed scope of materials to be used without compromising the visual activation desired by the client. The stand creative also delivered a small hospitality area which due to the small size and reusability aspect of the brief was integrated into one of the stand walls for space saving and modularity. Despite the smaller size of this stand, the design included the addition of LEDskin visuals was built into the key brand visual delivering a powerful brand statement to the clients’ audience and falling into the brand corporate guidelines of the client.
To enable the stand to be used without waste and using minimal logistics, the creative design of the stand was focused around the main construction of a reusable beMatrix frame. Secondly, it was powered using our own modular electrical connection system which has been designed so the electrical cabling did not need to be specific for the stand at each event or terminated for each specific cable formulating to a complete plug and play electrical power system. Furniture used on the stand floorspace was also reused at each event and will continue to be used for the client at future shows until it requires refurbishing at the end of its lifecycle. To meet the low energy component of the brief, the stand construction was of a modular format that could be utilised in a variety of floorspace formats. This meant that the stand required only to be manufactured the one initial time rather than for each event and therefore only logistics and transportation costs needed to factored for the complete roadshow. Finally, to meet the recycling and zero waste aspect of the brief, foamboard substrate was employed for the wall graphics which can be recycled at the end of its life rather than sent to landfill. All the timber from the wall frames was also repurposed intro fuel feedstock for our biomass boiler and used for space heating in the Priority workshop.
The stand met both aspects of the Lumex brief, creating a fully reusable stand for all four events which was low energy in production and sustainable by design in the use of construction and graphics use. The challenge of working with sustainable materials was of no detriment to the creative element of the brief and the resulting stand performed as a visual brand activation for the client engaging with visitors and showcased the Lumex audience in one of its key marketplaces and audiences. This stand design has led to our own team now focusing on offering reusable stand designs, and sustainable construction materials as a core client offer for all our clients.
